Gracious lodging in a turn-of-the-century Greek revival
The Prouty House is a tall 1911 Greek revival from Newport’s Big Lumber days that showcases in room-by-room craft the period’s trim finish work, elegant cabinetry, and grand stained glass.
All rooms share the ample turn-of-the-century staff’s kitchen.
The three bedrooms, their three private baths, and two studies are available individually or at a great value for the entire house.
Please see our rooms, rates, and rules below.
We look forward to seeing you!
Prouty House is close to the city center, parks, Canadian-American rail trail, the lake boardwalk, dining, and shopping. You’ll love the suites at Prouty House because of their 1911 character, rich bedding, private nooks and modern private full baths.
Well behaved pets are welcome.
Your Hosts Michel and Steve operate the full service Natural Food Market and Café at 194 Main St, just two blocks from the Prouty House.
Open seven days a week, the Market’s head chef can cater your stay, including your gluten-free vegan cousin and your Paleo auntie. Our catering team loves a challenge as well as providing locally grown and seasonal specialties.

The Prouty House is a short walk to many dining options and the shoreline of international Lake Memphremagog, ringed by the Green Mountains and ancient volcanic island formations. Start and finish your day with big-sky sunrises and sunsets, bird watching, or hand-holding.
The lakefront is also pet-friendly with pet designated rubbish bins and pick-up baggies (but carry your own just in case!)
And the lakefront is family-friendly with shaded picnic tables and benches at short intervals, lawns for chasing your toddlers, and a slope well known for rolling or sledding down.
Newport is also one of AARP’s Age-Friendly Cities, focusing especially on safe, walkable streets.
The Goodrich Public Library is open Monday through Saturday and speaks to generations of community generosity in the City of Newport and the Northeast Kingdom. Take your little ones to the library’s second floor to see the global wildlife collection of another era or maybe join the knitting or chess groups for an hour.
Prouty House is also a 20-minute drive to many exciting area attractions, including Jay Peak with its stunning ski slopes, three-season golf, and a year-round exhausting water park; the Old Stone House Museum; day touring in Quebec as well as the picturesque Northeast Kingdom countryside of farms, fairs, woodland hikes, lake recreation, locavore eats, distillery and brew merriment.
